Exceptional 17th Century Carved English Wassail Bowl in Figured Lignum Vitae - $8,500 - (Milford, NH)

An exceptional example of a carved English Wassail bowl, circa 1680, in figured lignum vitae with incised band decoration on the bowl, supported by a wide carved foot, with great overall patina. The word 'wassail' comes from the Anglo-Saxon phrase 'waes hael', which means 'good health'. Originally, the wassail was a drink made of mulled ale, curdled cream, roasted apples, eggs, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and sugar. The bowl is in very good overall condition, with some shrinkage cracks, and lip edge losses. Dimensions: 9 1/2" h x 9 1/2" w.Item ID: 5847
