Exceptional 17th Century Carved English Wassail Bowl in Figured Lignum Vitae - $8,500 - (Milford, NH)

An exceptional example of a carved English Wassail bowl, circa 1680, in figured lignum vitae with incised band decoration on the bowl, supported by a wide carved foot, with great overall patina. The word 'wassail' comes from the Anglo-Saxon phrase 'waes hael', which means 'good health'. Originally, the wassail was a drink made of mulled ale, curdled cream, roasted apples, eggs, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and sugar.
