JOHN KNOWLES PAINE (1839-1906) He was the first American-born composer to achieve fame for large-scale orchestral music. The senior member of a group of composers collectively known as the Boston Six, Paine was one of those responsible for the first significant body of concert music by composers from the United States. The Boston Six's other five members were Amy Beach, Arthur Foote, Edward MacDowell, George Chadwick, and Horatio Parker. Original 100-page (including soft covers), 6-3/4 x 10-3/4, book of music "Song of Promise" composed for the Cincinnati Musical Festival of May, 1888, inscribed, signed and dated "Cambridge - March 25, 1888" on the top of the cover. There is moderate overall aging, heavier along the spine, otherwise fully intact, rare!
