Black Walnut (Juglans Nigra), is a large deciduous tree typically about 100’ tall with a rounded crown. Black walnuts native range from New England states to North Texas to Florida. They appear in a variety of geographies from hills to low lands. In Fall the leaves are yellow and have a strong aromatic smell when crushed. The nuts are edible and encased in a yellow-green husk which turn black after the nut falls to the ground. The husks are used for stains, dyes and some medicines. The nuts are edible in many foods and for wildlife, but the meat can be difficult to remove from the shell. Walnut wood is highly valued for a lumber including cabinets, furniture, and fine veneers. It is the most expensive wood from North America.
