VINTAGE DIAMOND DRILL BIT ~ ROCK BIT ~ CORE SAMPLE ~ ENERGY MINERAL EXPLORATION - $189 - (Aztec, NM)

This unusual, seldom seen item, consists of a vintage diamond drill bit which was used in the minerals/energy exploration industry in northwest New Mexico. This drill/rock core sample bit would produce an approximately 2 1/8" diameter rock core. The head of this core bit is approximately 3 5/8" in diameter by 3/4" high. It is studded with diamonds, encased in an extremely hard non rusting metal. The head has 16 separate (convex) sections, with approximately 1/8" wide grooves separating each one. Each section has approximately 8-10 (larger size) industrial diamonds (see photos). Overall bit length is 7 1/4", with the attachment end having an internal threaded section. It appears to still have some use life remaining, as the diamonds are not ground down to the base metal. The steel section, below the diamond bit head, has a nice rust patina and is not twisted or bent. There are no manufacturers marks that I can see. Weight is nearly five pounds.
