1914 Antique Sampler on Linen Signed with Squirrels in Trees Girlhood Embroidery - $400 - (Reidsville, NC)

Neatly stitched sampler signed Charlotte Schmidt and dated 1914. Alphabet and numbers are done in red and blue thread. A Greek key motif divides the smaller letters and numbers from the rest of the sampler. Squirrels in a tree are stitched at the bottom. Sampler is from Forsyth County, NC, not far from the historic Bethabara community that was settled by Moravian immigrants in the 1700s. Many of these Moravians were originally born in Germany and landed first in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In the mid-1750s, these families came south and built the settlement of Wachovia, later called Salem, now known as Old Salem. I have found records of a Jens Schmidt who arrived in Forsyth County in 1766 and helped build Salem. He later became the town's first teacher, teaching the boys until his death in 1781. I found this sampler less than ten miles from Old Salem. It is possible that Charlotte was one of his descendants. Linen cloth is discolored with age. Professionally framed at a later date. Wooden frame has light wear, but is structurally intact. Measures 15"x15", framed. Carefully packed to arrive safely. Free USPS Priority Mail shipping to anywhere in the USA.
