Large Vintage Chinese Red Orange GILT Porcelain Bowl ~Marked ~Flowers & Birds - $188 - (Deerfield, VA)
This auction is for a lovely round old Chinese porcelain bowl. The bowl is heavily decorated with two large white panels of trees, flower and birds on the outside. The background color is burnt or red-orange and there are golden gilt floral designs all around the outside of the bowl. The inside of the bowl is white. The bottom is finished in brownish swirls with a center of white porcelain and a red & gold reign mark. The bowl is large (9 1/2" diameter) and heavy (3.9 pounds). I purchased this bowl years ago at a very high end Asian antique store in downtown San Francisco. The mark is on the bottom is Qianlong Nian Zhi (1736 - 1795) and with handwriting translated as "Qianlong Period Make". The antique dealer believed the bowl was actually made in the late 19th or early 20th center based on the design and beautiful condition of the gilt on the bowl. That would date the age of the bowl as late Qing Dynasty (circa 1880 - 1911). Early Republic era would date to circa 1912 - 1930. There are remnants of red marks on the bottom which might have been marked during the 1970s in China to designate genuine antiques. The bowl is in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, paint loss, repairs or damage. The gold gilt is in wonderful condition but there could be very small areas of loss due to normal usage through the years. There is some small loss on the top gold ring of the bowl. There could be small surface scratches from normal usage. There is a small black mark on the top rim of the bowl. There is a small raised spot on the rim that is a natural characteristic of porcelain. The inside of the bowl is not stained. There are a few light gray marks on the sides of the bowl inside. The bottom of the bowl has a few marks from normal usage along with the red marks that could be Chinese markings from the 1970s.
