GERMANY - GOSLAR, BAUERNGROSCHEN 1479-1481 SAINTS SIMON & JUDE - $75 - (Columbus, OH)

The only common coin minted with images of the Saints Simon and Jude. Simon (on the right) holds a saw, which according to tradition was the instrument of his martyrdom. Jude holds a book and a palm (Christian symbol of martyrs). These saints are associated with the city of Goslar because their feast day is the dame date (October 28) as the birthday of German emperor Henry III (1046-56), who had a palace in Goslar, and commissioned the construction of a church there dedicated to these saints. A nice, large (though thin) medieval coin, 27 mm, between a US quarter and half dollar in size. Obv: Standing saints. (Starting at 2:00) SANCTVS SIMON ET IVD (Saints SImon and Jude) Rev: Floriate helmet and shield of Goslar. MONETA NOVA GOSLARIEN (New coinage of Goslar) Saurma 3960. Unusual coin rarely seen for sale.
