Rare Silver Coin Mamluk Half Dirham 860 AH / 1456 AD Dimishq Mint Al-Ashraf Abu Al-Nasr Aynal For your Islamic Coin Collection - MAM080 Details Description: A small silver coin from the times of Aynal (Al-Ashraf Abu Al-Nasr), who ruled Egypt and Syria during the period 857-865 AH (1453-1461 AD). Aynal is from the Burji Mamluk dynasty. This is a small half dirham weighing about 1.5 grams and is not circular in shape measuring 15 x 14 millimeters. It is in generally fine condition with readable calligraphy on the obverse and the reverse, but having considerable wear and areas of flatness. The obverse shows the name "Aynal" within a nono-lope inn the center with additional parts of inscription that is mostly obliterated by areas of flatness and being off flan. The reverse shows the number 60 and the word Dimishq (indicating the coin was struck in 860 AH in Damascus) within a shape in the center and again characters from words that are undecipherable because of areas of flatness and being off flan. This is listed in Balog as 766 and is indeed struck in Damascus. Please carefully review the scans presented as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: 860 AH - 1456 AD. Mint: The coin clearly indicate the mint as Dimishq or Damascus. Size and weight: This is a fractional dirham, weighs ~1.5 grams of silver (said to be about 66.67% pure) and is 15x14 mm in dimension and is off-round in shape. References: It is Album #1014 with a rarity index (R) and is listed in Balog as #766. Condition: I would grade this coin as a fine or better. The coin itself is much better than the photos show with relatively well defined and legible calligraphy on both the obverse and reverse. The coin is a bit off round with misshapen edge. The coin shows considerable wear and has considerable strike weakness and areas of flatness along the edges but definitely shows the name Aynal, the Year 60 and the mint Dimishq. A rare and more difficult coin to find, which would make a nice addition…
