Original Kono Barei (1844-1895) Japanese Woodblock Print, "Geese and Lilies," from Barei's Album of Flowers and Birds. The Album was first published in 1893. Considered by many as his best work, this beautiful series features birds paired with flowers for each of the four seasons. Depicted in their natural habitat or perched on striking floral arrangements, the birds are carefully observed and beautifully drawn with a wonderful attention to detail. Kono Barei was born in Kyoto in the mid 19th century. He studied Japanese classical panting with masters of several different schools. He helped found the Kyoto Prefecture School of Painting and later opened his own studio. Image size: 13 3/8" x 8 3/4" + margins. Condition: Excellent color and detail. Backed with paper from previous album inclusion. Slight soiling and rubbing near edges. Generally in good condition overall. See "White Chickens and Chrysanthemums" for charming pairing.
