Very cool, ceramic beer stein representing the US Navy's USS New Orleans LPH-11 (Iwo Jima Class Amphibious Ship). It measures 5" high with a 3.75" base diameter. It's in very good to excellent condition with clean, vibrant colors and shiny gold leaf piping below the rim and above the base. Not only did the ship live a long, useful military life (1968-1997), but it was the recovery ship for two Skylab Missions (Skylabs 3 and 4 in 1973 and 1974, respectively), as well as the recovery ship for the Apollo-Soyuz Mission in 1975 in which it plucked Astronauts Thomas Stafford, Deke Slayton, and Vance Brand out of the Pacific. It also had a movie role in Ron Howard's/Tom Hank's Apollo 13, playing the role of its sister ship the USS Iwo Jima (then decommissioned), which recovered that ill-fated Apollo crew.
