Drift boat 14' custom built double ender - $3,800 - (Columbia Falls, MT)

The Inspiration for this boat comes from thedesigns and craftsmanship of Woodie Hindeman, as described by Roger Fletcher inhis book ”Drift Boats and River Dories”. The design of this boat is based onthe 14’ double ender. Modifications suchas reducing the rocker and side panel shortening have been employed to increasestability, row-ability and wind resistance of this boat. The Woods used are Quarter Sawn White Oak(gunnels, handrails, chines and caps), Ash (knee brace) and Vertical GrainWestern Larch (framing, floors and stems). The panels are constructed of marinegrade mahogany plywood. The Oak, Ashand plywood are purchased through a local lumber yard. The WesternLarch is identified by the distinctive fine grain, tight growth rings andbrassy color. The particular Larch treethat went into this boat was a 300 year old specimen killed by the fires of2002, and salvaged logged from Whale Creek drainage of the upper North Fork ofthe Flathead River valley. The Techniques and Finishes used inconstruction are time proven boat building methods and finishes. All fasteners are stainless steel, with 3-M5200 Marine Sealer and Adhesive used for bonding and sealing. The side panels have been laminated withepoxy, coated with fiberglass. Brightside Polyurethane Marine paint and primerwas used outside and Captains Marine Varnish on the inside. The bottom is laminated with 2 layers offiberglass and finished in an epoxy/graphite mix to provide a tough, slick andmaintainable surface. All other surfaces(framing, gunnels ect…) are finished with an easily maintainable Penefin MarineOil finish. Unlike the film coatingproduction type finishes of today, this hand rubbed oil finish does not peel,flake or cloud. This is a durable finishthat can be easily brought back to a new condition by reapplying and rubbinginto the wood.
