1940 Epiphone Olympic Archtop Guitar w/ Lifton Hard Case. Like David Rawlings. - $1,225 - (Yellow Springs, OH)

Travel back in time with this vintage acoustic guitar. Made in 1940 by the great Epiphone Company in New York City, New York, it's an Epiphone Olympic Masterbilt archtop guitar. Serial number 14518 identifies it as 1940. Here's what Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars says about this model: acoustic archtop; mahogany back and sides; rosewood fingerboard; trapeze tailpiece; [genuine pearl] dot inlay; 15-1/4" lower bout; single-bound top and back; center-dip ("storybook") headstock. It also has a genuine pearl headstock logo, not a decal. It's been much played and loved, so there is ordinary age and play wear all over. The nickel-plated brass trapeze tailpiece cracked, and it has been solidly brazed back together by a past owner. The frets and fingerboard have significant wear, but still play well. The tuners work great. I believe that it is all original. New strings. Comes in a vintage Lifton ("Built Like a Fortress") hard case that is slightly big for it, but truly protects it. The case handle has been repaired with black electrical tape, but works well. The great American guitarist David Rawlings plays a smaller 1936 Epiphone Olympic archtop acoustic guitar with Gillian Welch and sounds about as good as a guitar player can. That same year, Epiphone started making this larger-bodied Olympic. In the 1960s, Epiphone started making a Olympic solid body electric guitar. It sure liked the Olympic name, I reckon. This is a classic All-American player's guitar. I love the sound of it: big, full, and clear.
