1960s "Maruha" Kawai TEISCO Violin Bass w/ Case. Beatles Hofner Copy. MIJ. - $215 - (Yellow Springs, OH)
Travel back in time with this vintage electric bass. Made in Japan, likely Kawai, in the mid or late 1960s, it's a copy of the Hofner's violin bass, made world famous by Sir Paul McCartney. The headstock brand logo is Maruha, which is an obscure brand. The pickups match Kawai pickups shown in Frank Meyers' classic "History of Japanese Electric Guitars." It has been much played, so has ordinary use wear all over, with various scuffs and scrapes all over. The metal finish has tarnish, particularly on the pickup covers, which are flaked. The bridge does not seem to be original, as there are visible screw holes for a larger bridge base. Truss rod. Everything works on it. I just cleaned the electronics. It comes in a generic chipboard case, which is functional, but too big for the bass. The 12th fret action is about 5/32", not great, but functional. It's not the greatest bass, but it works. And it looks cool as heck. If you do make an offer during business hours, please know that I typically respond to offers within the hour. Questions? It will be well packed with plenty of new 1/2" bubble wrap and shipped in a new 46"x19"x7" stout cardboard instrument box.
