Description A simple Japanese woven bamboo ikebana basket made from natural 'susudake' or sooted bamboo in a casual 'sumikago' basket form. Estimated Taisho era (1912-1926) from Tokyo, Japan. Dimensions: Height to top of handle 9.5”. Height of vase 5". Diameter 9” Ideal basket for a simple spring-to-fall floral display for the genkan or tea room to evoke a wabi-sabi feel. Excellent overall detail shows effortless craftsmanship in a simple pattern and weave. The artist first split the bamboo to get thin, 1/32 in width, pliable strips of the original bamboo. The Base: In keeping with the simple linear style of this basket, the artist did not create a formal base. Instead, the artist started with four sets, each set with four bamboo strips interwoven to create a base using the mat plaiting pattern ( gozame ami) or simple plaiting, one of the most popular basketry techniques. The Body: A short and bulbous body is achieved by inserting extra vertical strips and continuing the mat plaiting. Throughout the basket, the horizontal elements are narrower and more closely spaced than the vertical strips of bamboo.The rim is the lifeblood of a basket. If it breaks, the basket falls apart.....The Rim: The rim is finished using a wider bamboo strip split into two. The split bamboo is tightly peiced together using the vertical strips from the body in a close overlap pattern. This simple rim is a contrast to the close fine pattern and defines the circular shape of the body. The Handle: Thin strips of rattan are used to create a wrapped handle.
