AUTHENTIC VINTAGE ANDY WARHOL HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN PAPER CUTS ART RUG SANDMAN - $1,495 - (Imperial, MO)
Warhol was a fan of Hans Christian Andersen when he was a child -- and much later paid tribute to the Danish author with not only a portrait, but also interpretations of four of Andersen's own folk art paper-cut artworks, also called silhouettes. This rug version (probably manufactured by the Danish textile maker Ege) features the H.C. Andersen paper cutout work known as Miller with Two Ole Lukojes. Evidently Hans had a thing for mills, which adorned the Danish landscape in profusion, and also had a passion for the mythical Danish version of the sandman, Ole Lukoje. In this work of art, two Ole Lukojes appear almost as children themselves, holding umbrellas with beautiful imagery underneath, shown to well-behaved children as they drifted off to sleep. Weird enough? That Hans was practically Surreal. You could frame this textile rug or have a hanging structure attached. Perfect for a lucky child's room if you want to introduce her or him to both Hans Christian Andersen and Andy Warhol. Measures approx. 34" x 32". There are no outright flaws, but you can tell it's not new. Pair it with the actual art prints or search for the other Warhol-Andersen rugs. It is 'signed' Warhol in the weave. Probably wool but not sure. Warhol's Andersen tribute was created late in his life, in homage to a man who also had the youthful sensibilities of a child, and found wonder both in real life and in the worlds he fantasized. This is a great way to afford art when Warhol's screenprints are out of reach.
