Kopel Gurwin (1923-1990) was a Lithuanian born Israeli painter and graphic artist, born in Vilnius, imprisoned by the invading Germans during WWII, immigrating to Sweden after the war, and then to Israel in 1950. In Israel Gurwin studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, where he began to earn recognition and prizes for his poster designs. In 1964 the artist began to work with felt, creating these extraordinary, colorful, hand-stitched wall hangings that brought him further recognition and critical acclaim. Throughout his artistic career, and even after his death in 1990, Gurwin’s works have been hung in exhibitions around the world.
