We would recommend reupholstering unless you really like the shabby look of the tapestry style fabric. The fabric is torn and exposes the original padding and liner burlap. The paint has chipped and faded in a very beautiful way leaving a nice patina that would survive the reupholstering. The original hardware is beautiful on its own, and the whole bed is much easier to put together than would be expected! You simply hand tighten the 4 components together with the hardware and, voila! There are 2 ledges on each of the bed stretchers which would hold a box spring, but we would recommend gentle testing before you trust this frame to bear the weight of you and your bed unaided.
