Fiji Baka South Pacific Banyan Tree Wood Turned Vase Bowl Museum Carving Art - $3,250 - (Colorado Springs, CO)
Fiji South Pacific Baka Tree Wood Turned Vase / Bowl One-of-a-kind - RARE I purchased this bowl new in Suva, Fiji in 2000 or 2001. From 1993 to 2002, I lived in the South Pacific and collected high end native art. This by far was my most treasured purchase. It is a one of a kind masterpiece that is worthy of being displayed in a museum or any presidential palace. It was made by a native father and son on the western side of Viti Levu. At the time, they produced similar items from the very rare Baka wood. They no longer make them and I do not know of anyone that sells them. Baka is the Fijian name for a gigantic lovely tree. In English it is commonly called the Pacific or Polynesian Banyan, or the Strangler Fig due to it’s parasitic nature. The Baka tree loves latching onto things and taking them over with it’s massive roots. The inside of the Baka tree houses a white sap that is used by the local Fijians for medical purposes such as earaches, sickness and even pain related to childbirth. In India and other Asian countries, it is called The Justice Tree, as business deals were transacted beneath these trees and held to be binding. Merchants were called “Banian”. It is in excellent condition and has been stored in the dry climate of Colorado since 2002. The measurements for the bowl are 21 inches in diameter, 16 inches high and it weighs 17 pounds. It is available for local pickup in Colorado Springs or I will ship it FREE via USPS Retail Ground to the lower 48 states. I have not used eBay in years, but my rating at the time was 100% positive. Please ask any questions prior to purchase.
