Tekke Turkoman Necklace w/ Udhiya Tokens A very special necklace with a written record included. The necklace is 33.25" (84.5cm) long. The pendant is 3-3/4" (9.5cm) long. Total weight is 106 grams. The pendant is adorned with carnelian stones, the necklace with amber beads. There are traces of 24k gold gilding left on the pendant. From the included provenance: "Antique Tekke-Turkoman pendant from Samark and Russian pendant of pure silver bullion, chased with 24k gold leaf, set with Himalayan carnelian. Amber from the Aral Sea. 'Haji' coins and temple tokens from Mecca. Circa 1800." Summary from a wonderful friend who researched this necklace for me: "It was once owned by a Hajjah, a woman who undertook the long and dangerous pilgrimate to Mecca from Central Asia. The tokens are called Udhiya tokens, proof for the pilgrims that a sheep will be sacrificed on their behalf. The pilgrims themselves don't kill the sheep, that is done in a designated part of Mecca under government control. The meat is given to the poor. Wearing the tokens means that you are not only a 'Hajji', but have fulfilled all your duties as a pilgrim. It would have been an arduous journey from Central Asia to Mecca in those days, and Hajjis were highly respected." Nice condition. I have not taken the liberty to clean it as I will leave that for the perspective buyer to decide what they want to do.
