My husband and I have owned and restored over 1000 antique and vintage Singer sewing machines (over 100 Model 301s), and along the way we have accumulated a large stock of vintage Singer parts. The parts aren’t doing anyone any good sitting in our workshop, so we have decided to send them on to where they’re needed. And this can be a very useful part, indeed, but a brief explanation is necessary.Introduced in 1951, Model 301 was Singer’s first modern, “slant-needle” sewing machine. And just for the record, Singer Models 301 and 301A are exactly the same. Singer called the first ones “301,” and then added the “A” at the beginning of 1953 to acknowledge the town of Anderson, South Carolina, where they were manufactured.Singer sold the 301 with two different folding bed extensions: “short-bed” machines were designed to go into sewing tables and desks and cabinets, and “long-bed” machines were designed to be portables. The short extension measures about three-and-one-quarter inches across, and the long extension is about six inches.Why is this information important? Because long-bed 301s cannot be mounted in sewing tables or cabinets. The six-inch bed extension is too long for the opening. Only a short-bed 301 will fit.So, if you own a long-bed 301 that you would like to use in a cabinet or a Singer “card table,” you need this short extension. It’s simple to make the switch, and you can still use your machine as a portable with the shorter bed extension installed.Singer painted Model 301s in three colors: black, mocha, and a two-tone cream and beige. This part is the mocha color.
