Lot of 4 ANTIQUE CAST IRON DOUBLE HUNG WINDOW SASH COUNTER WEIGHTS 6 lbs POUNDS - $18 - (Lake Linden, MI)

This is a lot of four approx 6# cast-iron double hung sash weights. They are likely one-hundred years old if not older. They came from one of many old mining houses in the historic area of Michigan's Upper Peninsula called "The Copper Country". This lot of four is one of many available, they came from an old mining house from within one of our nation's newest national parks, The Keweenaw National Historical Park and though the many cast-iron weights have not been tracked, they come from mining houses associated for the most with either the Calumet & Hecla (C&H) Mining Company or the Quincy Mining Company. The weights are not an even weight, but each is shown in the photo on the paper. The casting process was not that accurate so the weights vary. Typically, each double hung window had four sash weights in a cavity, two to a side, attached with cotton rope at the top loop of the weight, up through the jamb cavity, the rope extending out through a hole at the top of the jamb where a pulley was inserted in the jamb and the other end of the rope attached to each sash, upper and lower, the rope hidden in a channel cut in the wood of the sash, a knot on the end of the rope and at times a box nail driven into the knot to help hold it in place.
