Antique Quilt 1924 - Marie Webster, "Pink Poppies" exquisite workmanship - $1,560 - (Carrollton, TX)
This Marie Webster quilt was made from a pattern, but the level of craftsmanship of the quilters at that time varied. This one was made by exceptionally gifted and dedicated quilters. It is signed by my grandmother, Cora Nelson, and dated 1924. It is 79" tall by 70" wide, an off white background with pink and green flowers appliquéd on it. The construction and quilting are of excellent quality and craftsmanship, this quilt is in very good condition. The whole thing is hand quilted in 5/8" diagonal lines and flowers mimicking the appliqués are quilted in the background, in between the actual appliquéd flowers. I took some pictures of the back, where you can see the outlines of the flowers and a sunflower design that is quilted as part of the background quilting. It's quite complex in all it's details. There are five places where the appliquéd flower fabric has turned yellow. Please see the pictures. It's still a killer Marie Webster quilt, however, and the last one I have. It has been in storage all this time, there are some fold creases on it, and I don't think it's ever been washed. There are a few aging stains. I can send you more pictures if you like.
