Vintage 4/4 German Violin w/ Case and Bow - $295 - (Vancouver, WA)
This old violin appears to be complete and playable. It measures about 23 7/8" long by 8" wide. The body is about 14 1/4" long. It is stamped, "Germany," near the end button, as shown in the 4th photo. One website that seemed to be an authority on the subject, suggests that items stamped with only the country of origin, were likely produced between 1891 and 1914; after that date the item would likely be marked, "Made In (country of origin)." See http://www.coxsackie.com/reference/cooaadt.htm The back and sides appear to be lightly flamed maple. The front appears to be spruce. There does not appear to be any cracks or open seams. The fingerboard, tailpiece, pegs and purfling all appear to be painted or dyed black. It has a few scratches consistent with a violin of this age. The biggest flaw seems to be a reddish stain on the back, as seen in photo #11. The sound post is in place. The bridge appears to have been replaced. The fine tuner on the e-string appears to be vintage. The case it was found in is "faux leather" and appears functional, although a little fragile. Useful for carrying the instrument from place to place, but don't check it as baggage on an airline. The bow appears inexpensive and non-vintage.
