Yamaha YHR-871 Double French Horn - $6,350 - (Wenham, MA)
A couple of years ago, Yamaha released its new line of Geyer-style horns to much acclaim. The 871 is their top-of-the-line custom model. It's a medium-bell Geyer-style instrument, but with a larger cylindrical bore than most. I suspect this design was meant to emulate large-bore geyers like Rauch horns. I find the larger bore helps with slotting. It's very easy to move from one note's notch to the other, aiding in flexibility, and you can get a great big sound out of this horn when you need to. Brass slides as well, which is also a callback to the original Geyers, and which I think gives horns a big of a warmer "aura" to their sound. This horn is in as-new-to-barely-used condition. It managed to obtain a tiny pencil-mark sized ding on the bell flare likely during shipping, but this is the only blemish. Valve compression is perfect and is a bargain at well below retail.
