Meissen Otter, By Max Esser, Bottger Stoneware. This is an absolutely fabulous, Meissen model of an sea otter, modelled by Max Esser, standing on a rocky outcrop with head turned looking back. The reverse side has the artists name, M. Esser written and the underside is stamped with the Meissen crossed swords the words Böttger Steinzeug. It is made of Bottger stoneware which is the original porcelain developed by and named after Bottger the imprisoned alchemist who figured out the secret to making porcelain in Europe in 1710. This original brown colored porcelain is the precursor to white Meissen porcelain and is very dense with a lovely patina. Exquisitely modelled with a curled tail, quizzical expression, and beautiful alert eyes and ears, M Esser received a “Grand Prix” for this design at the 1937 Paris world fair, and it’s no wonder from every angle it’s interesting and captivating. 10” H x 5” W x 5” L.
