Fits a 9mm hole, I've installed these in many banjos with worn or to too large of a hole, all I do is fill the hole with a wood filler that sets up very hard. Wait till filler is hard all the way thru then drill 9mm hole in the center of filler. Test fit and modify hole if needed, when happy with fit use some epoxy adhesive to hold gear in place, let set overnight and it's ready to string and tune. There are probably many other ways to do this but this has worked many times for me over the last 10 years.
