Pair of Antique Split Wood Underarm Crutches, 48" Tall. The rubber tips on these say "Davol" and "51". I dont know if that is just the brand of the rubber tips or if that is the brand of the crutches. I dont know if crutches this old came with rubber tips, so they could have been put on there. They belonged to my grandpa who recently passed away. If he was hanging on to them there was a reason. We found them in a closet when we were cleaning out the house, so they have been kept inside and are still in remarkable condition for their age. From what I have read, these are most likely from the early 1900's. They are considered "V" shape crutches and were patented in 1917, but were in use well before. I have seen pics of this type of crutches as early as the 1890's. I would bet that my grandpa came across them and restored them and pit them away. He loved to restore anything that was made of wood. That would explain why they are in such good shape. The rubber tips are starting to dry out and crack but besides that they look very good.
