Beautiful very early six lens folding, collapsible Aluminum Aitchison field / opera glasses c.1889. The first ever Instrument like this made from aluminum. The prices for these old glasses were incredibly high at the time of their manufacture as aluminum was fairly new on the scene and at this time techniques to produce Aluminum in ways modestly cost-effective did not emerge until 1889. It took me many years to find and acquire this set. ( yes set, I have another pair I consider rarer than these as I've never seen another pair like them anywhere ). If I had to guess I would think the other brass pair might Indeed be an earlier example of a very different and simple design pair of folding brass field / opera glasses made by the same Aitchison Co. that produced these gems.
