The purpose of a hydrometer is to determine the specific gravity of a liquid. From this it is often possible to determine the composition or strength of the liquid. The Sikes's hydrometer was, for very many years, the standard means of determining the alcohol content of spirits and hence the duty payable. This Sikes's Hydrometer by LOFTUS has the address of 6 Beaufoy Terrace London serial # 22783. The fitted mahogany box has its original burgundy silk lining in the upper half and burgundy velvet lining in the lower half. The box is in excellent condition and measures 20 cm x 10 cm x 5cm. The kit contains all of the brass weights stamped from 90, 80, 70, 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, and the round barrel weight. All have a serial number of 22783.The main brass float is graduated 0-10. It is inscribed on one side with "Sykes" P51 0 and the serial number 22783. The hollow float is in very good condition with little wear to its surface and no dents. The original mercury thermometer is intact, mounted on an white backing material that for political reasons cannot be mentioned on eBay. It is labeled Joesph Long Limited. Comes with book Spirit tables for Sikes’s Hydrometer.
