Antique Georgian Silver 'Coral & Bells" Baby Teether Rattle c.1800 - $580 - (Broadway, VA)
A Georgian sterling silver "Coral & Bells" baby rattle & teether. Probably English. Measures just over 5 inches long, including the white coral 'handle'. Eight silver bells dangle from the bulbous middle. Engraved within a shield on the top side of the whistle mouthpiece are the initials "GGC". On the back is a silver ring through which a ribbon or cord would be placed. I could find no maker's mark. CONDITION: The original coral was at some point replaced with the white coral it now has. About 1 inch above where the coral exits, the silver has a split that goes half-way around (see photos). This likely was caused when the coral was replaced and could be repaired by a skilled artisan. There are the expected minor 'dings' and two very tiny 'pinholes'. The price reflects this damage. The bells appear to have 'teeth marks' on them.
