COMING TO YOU FROM CEDAR STREET TREASURES THIS CABINET WAS USED TO DISPLAY BATTERIES MADE BY THE FRENCH BATTERY AND CARBON COMPANY, 1-17-1906 IN CHICAGO, IL. JAMES RAMSEY, P.W. STRONG AND ALFRED LANDON ORGANIZED THE COMPANY AND NAMED THE COMPANY TO HONOR THE FRENCHMAN WHO DEVELOPED THE FIRST BATTERY. THE COMPANY SET UP OPERATION IN MADISON, WI, IT WAS THERE THAT THE FIRST MADISON BATTERY WAS MADE. SOON DR. CHARLES F. BURGESS (FOUNDER OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT AT UNIVERSITY OF WI) WAS HIRED TO IMPROVE QUALITY AND PROFITABLITY. IN 1914, THE BUSINESS STARTED SELLING BURGESS MADE FLASHLIGHTS, "FRENCH FLASHERS".A DEVASTATING FIRE IN 1915, IN THE SECTION OF THE FRENCH FACTORY THAT WASRENTED TO BURGESS CAUSED A FALLING OUT BETWEEN RAMSEY AND BURGESS. IT WAS AFTER THIS THAT RAMSEY STOPPED BUYING BURGESS FLASHLIGHTS AND STARTED MANUFACTURING THEIR OWN. IN 1920, THE FRENCH BATTERY AND CARBON COMPANY NAMED THE LIGHTENING LIKE CARTON CHARACTER IT HAD BEEN USING ADVERTISING ITS FLASHLIGHTS, "MR. RAY-O-LITE". RAY-O-SPARK WAS THE BRAND NAME FOR AUTOMOBILE STARTER BATTERIES AND RAY-O-VAC FOR RADIO BATTERIES. IN 1934, THE FRENCH BATTERY AND CARBON COMPANY OFFICIALLY BECAME THE RAY-O-VAC COMPANY. THIS CABINET IS IN VERY GOOD SHAPE WITH THE ORIGINAL "FRENCH BATTERY AND CARBON CO. MANUFACTURE" PLATE STILL ATTACHED. THE CABINET IS 20" X 11 1/2" X 36". PLEASE VIEW PHOTO GALLERY.
