Royal Vienna employed some the finest artists in the porcelain world and these lamps are testimony to that talent. Each lamp is painted with allegorical scenes with a rich gold background. The first with “Augustus und Cleopatra” on the front, presumably a scene of Cleopatra surrendering to Augustus. The back side features “Auffindung Orpheus’s Leier und Aschen” - Discovery of Orpheus’s lyre and ash. A pair of naked nymph’s rise from the underworld and deliver to Orpheus his golden lyre and a funerary urn presumably with the ashes of his beloved wife, Eurydice. The Second lamp features a scene of Paris of Troy meeting Helene Queen of Sparta with whom he would elope and trigger events leading to the Trojan War. The other features a young Orpheus before Hercules who is clad in a lion skin. Both lamps have smaller scenes painted on the bases depicting several events in the life of Eros. Both lamps have the titles of these allegories written on the bottom of the base and each is marked with the Royal Vienna “beehive” (shield) mark. Each lamp is additionally signed by the artist “A. Forster.” Each measures about 34in to top of finial, 18.5in to top of urns. Condition: Some minor wear to gilding at sharp edges, tiny chips edge of base above the smaller cartouche with Eros being presented with a plant. 2 tiny chips in just about the same area on the other lamp above cartouche where Eros is holding a torch.
