Lot 70 Miniature Wheaties License Plates - 1953 1954 - Mini U.S. Canada & More - $155 - (Waukegan, IL)

Up for your consideration is this lot of 70 miniature License Plates. They were a premium from Wheaties Cereal. There are 45 U.S. plates and 21 from Canada and other countries. Condition ranges from near mint to fair. A few have been bent. Please see photographs for a better idea of the condition. The Wheaties promotion began in February 1953 with the U.S. plates (48 states) being glued on the back side of Wheaties boxes. Grocery stores and Wheaties were suddenly losing money in the promotion because kids would sit in the cereal aisle, yank off the plates and immediately trade with each other. By April 1953, the U.S. plates (48 states) were put inside boxes of Wheaties. There was a form on each side panel per box to order sets. There were four sets (East, Midwest, South and West), 12 plates to a set = 48 states. Cost was 25 cents and a Wheaties box top per set. In the summer of 1953 Wheaties issued Canadian plates, Islands & Territories and Foreign plates. In 1954, Wheaties only issued U.S. plates (48 states). All plates were manufactured in Rockford, Illinois. Please inspect the photographs closely. They provide important detail of this item and are part of the description of this item.
