The word Kelsch is a Germanic word, taken from "Kolnisch Blau", which refers to a plant grown primarily as animal feed, (whose leaves and stems were the sources of an old blue dye) For centuries ( as early as the 7th century) the plant, along with hemp and linen, was the main crop cultivated in eastern France and neighboring Germany. In the 18th century, the word kelsch came to describe the hand-woven linen and hemp cloths made in the French region of Alsace, usually woven by poor rural farmers. These textiles were hand loomed on narrow looms, and seamed together by their selvages to form wider widths for larger textiles. When pillow cover and mattress covers were created using these wonderful fabrics, they were sew together in large or small envelopes with openings for stuffing. These textiles were either stuffed with straw or feathers for use as mattress covers, duvet covers and pillow cases ~*~ ~~*~ This beautiful comforter / duvet cover dates from the early 1900's. ~A beautiful Kelsch textile! ~ GORGEOUS! ~*~ This wonderful textile is woven using a lovely linen , red check/plaid design!!~ Beautiful texture ~ This wonderful textile uses a lovely heavy weight linen on the front, and the back is made using a beautiful, finely woven , nubby homespun plain linen. There are 3 glass buttons at the top for closing and charming hand stitched button holes. This textile has a seam that runs up the front that is machine stitched ~ it would make the most wonderful comforter cover, or tremendous amount of the lovely fabric for pillows, upholstery , window treatments, daybed covers, pillows, lampshades or all of the above! I like to use these lovely textiles as lounging pads, simply fill with feather comforters and transport to your reading corner! ~*~ ~*~ ~ lovely for so many uses, so much lovely fabric!!~ !
