Obverse design is bust of Francisco de Paula Santander, Columbian revolutionary hero (1792-1840). Given command of guerrillas by Simon Bolivar, General Santander was instrumental in victorious War of Independence, became vice president of new republic (1821). A devout believer in constitutional government, he later led unsuccessful opposition against dictator Bolivar. Coin reverse shows denomination within wreath. 30 centavo stamp commemorates the sesquicentennial of War of Independence (1819). This scene is called "Paso del Ejercito Libertador por el Paramo de Pisba".....crossing of the liberation army through dangerous pass in the Andes. "Liberator" Simon Bolivar sees to a wounded man in this painting by Francisco Antonio Caro of Bogota. Postmark in capital Bogota on coin release date 12-11-70 is first air mail cancellation ("aereo") in Certified Coin history.
