Louis Akin El Tovar, Grand Canyon 1906 Original Santa Fe Chromolitho Fred Harvey - $2,250 - (Lawrence, KS)

AKIN, LOUIS BENTON. El Tovar, Grand Canyon. 1906. Iconic original chromolithograph, framed as issued on chipboard. Akin was commissioned by the Santa Fe Railroad in 1903 to paint Hopi Native Americans. His work with the Hopi was a commercial success and he went on to publish an article sympathetic to their struggle, largely a result of the influence of the newly arrived AT&SF. Upon returning from the West he went on to paint this stunning image of El Tovar with the Grand Canyon sprawling across the background. Printed in 1906 these were often issued to be displayed at AT&SF depots as a promotional for trips to visit, “Fred Harvey’s El Tovar” and the Grand Canyon. On the very rare occasion that one is unearthed, it is often from the heirs of an AT&SF agent. Manuscript notations on verso of this print read; “Fred Harvey’s El Tovar Hotel. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.” Followed by, “Purchased March 4th, 1921. Salina, KS - 595.” In a period frame, as issued in this state: 35 3/4” x 17 3/8”. Very Good Condition; chromolithograph remains bright and unfaded. Slight edge-wear to original chipboard.
