Gibson RB-250 - $1,950 - (Heber Springs, AR)
1980 Gibson RB-250. Serial #82910117 When I got this RB-250 it had been a lady’s dad’s banjo. It was crusty and a little rough. It had some minor issues. I took it all apart, cleaned it and fixed a cracked heel. It wasn’t broken just cracked in shipping. I got glue completely through the crack so it’s stronger than ever. I guarantee the repair. I found some unique features in this RB. The Black Gibson rim was not a 12 ply jelly roll type rim but a 5 ply laminated rim. The GBB tone ring was not one of those 2 pound jobs but a 4.4 pound heavyweight. The rim and ring fit perfectly. It has sone belt buckle rubbing in the resonator lacquer but not through the finish. The sound is powerful yet sweet from this RB-250. Old Gibson’s when set up right have that old sought after sound. It’s amazing. The neck has some dings in it. See the pictures. I put a Sullivan roasted Maple bridge on it. All the parts are original but the tailpiece has been upgraded to a Kershner adjustable tailpiece. Comes with a new Guardian hard shell case. The sound is awesome. It has that more mellow Mahogany sound that isn’t harsh to your ears. It sounds beautiful. I did a sound test between it and 4 other Gibson banjos I have and it was closest to my 1928 RB-3.
