Jackson Guldan Octave Mandolin / Double Irish Tenor - 24" Scale Conversion - $700 - (Loris, SC)
Jackson Guldan was a US company out of Columbus, Ohio that made a whole lot of violins and some well constructed parlor sized guitars that had a unique neck setup - the angle can be adjusted anytime by turning a small inset screw at the neckjoint. With that easily adjustable neck, a 24'" scale and trapeze tailpiece it makes it a good choice for a Octave mandolin, Irish Bouzouki - or Double tenor conversion. I've put on new Grover style tuners - a new tailpiece - new bone nut and modified the original bridge for eight strings. -- The top is bird's eye maple - the back and sides are maple - maple neck - even the fingerboard and bridge are stained maple. It's tuned to play in G-D-A-E and the string pairings are: 47-47 30-30 14-14 10-10 The tuning is in fifths, like a violin. If you've played tenor guitar or mandocello then chording this is like cake to pick up. -- If you ever gave up on a mandocello this one is a lot easier to handle - especially that bass pair. -- The neck is wider than a traditional octave mandolin - wider spacing between the pairs makes it easier to chord IMO. The string height is 1/8" at the 12th fret bass side and just under that treble side - plays well there up and down the fingerboard. The acoustic quality on this little box is outstanding. It weighs less than 5 lbs, but push it hard on rhythm and it drowns out a dreadnought or a banjo - and it has a sustain that just rings on and on at the end of a note. -- Of the two octave mandolins I have listed here this one has the softer, less bright tone - still likely to be the loudest acoustic in the room though. I've posted a sample on Soundcloud under Claytonaudio Ships in a rough but working period case. Length - 36" Scale - 24 1/4" Lower bout - 13" Upper bout - 9 1/2" Nut - 1 11/16" Weight - 4.5 lbs
