Very Rare Early Georgian English Sterling Silver Toast Rack 1777 - $1,795 - (Cary, NC)

RARE EARLY GEORGIAN STERLING SILVER TOAST RACK 1777 MADE BY MATTHEW FENTON & RICHARD CRESWICK Most pleased to be able to offer this museum quality very early example of an English silver toast rack dating to 1777. Sterling silver toast racks had only just began being made in the early to mid 1770's. To be able to find one of that age, in this overall condition, is extremely rare. This unique rack stands 5 3/4 inches tall and 7 3/4 inches long and 4 1/2 inches wide, and weighs 325 grams (11.4oz). Of an elongated oval design, with a 1/2 inch reticulated and pierced siding finished with a beaded edge. The interior field of the side displays a continuous pattern stars within co-joined ovals along the entire circumference save for one small tiny cartouche that has not been engraved. Punched with the following hallmarks: lion passant for assayed English silver, city mark of a crown for Sheffield, date letter of a gothic "h" for 1777, and the makers mark of MF over RC within a square, for Matthew Fenton and Richard Cheswick. (1774-1784) The rack is comprised of 5 bars of hand shaped and stamped silver, pinned to a polished flat oval base. Each bar carries the same double diamond in progressive size from small to large to small, with the center bar incorporating a simple round ring handle. Each bar attaches to the base with a plug cap to hold the wired bar frame in place, and then stringers are laced underneath to maintain an even tension. Each stringer obviously hand made and adjusted making each one slightly different. The base stands upon four ball shaped talon feet. This highly collectible toast rack would be the cornerstone to any collection. To be used daily on one's personal desk for letters and correspondence, or as intended with toast, and some rather splendid marmalade...or perhaps...just for display. Offering this fine example of Georgian silver at $1,795. SHIPPING BY USPS PRIORITY MAIL WITH TRACKING /DELIVERY CONFIRMATION IS FREE Matthew Fenton & Co (Matthew …
