Cornus officinalis, also known as the Japanese Cornelian cherry. Named Shan Zhu Yu in China. It is a different species than the regular cornelian cherry, though they are similar. These grow to a large shrub size and produce edible red fruit, looking like elongated red cherries. They are good to eat fresh and are used in traditional Chinese medicine. They can also be dried. I have found them to be similar to cornelian cherry in growth habit, and adapt well to different soils, having no problems with clay soil. They are also reliably self fertile, where regular cornelian cherries are not reliably self pollinating. Also, the cherries set much later in the summer than the standard cornelian cherry. A very unique plant, hardy from zone 5 to 8. These are 6-12 inches tall.Law prevents shipment of this plant to California, Oregon, Washington Hawaii.
