Antique TRI-COLOR Woven Colonial Overshot Coverlet, Ctr Seam, Salmon Navy White - $128 - (Clayton, GA)
This is a wool and linen woven coverlet that measures about 92 inches by 66 inches wide. It's a beautiful tricolor with salmon and navy blue pattern on white linen. It has a center seam because most home looms were not wide enough to weave spreads to cover the bed. They wove twice the length needed and stitched the two halves together. This would have been woven on a 4 harness loom. You can't achieve this pattern on anything less. The hemmed ends show more wear because that's the area that gets pulled up to the chin and wears faster. It has one 4 x 5 inch area which is unwoven. There's not a hole, but it's not quite the way it was originally. The last 2 pictures show that area front and back. The 3rd picture shows the discolored corner. The 4th picture shows the seam. This came from an estate auction. It's probably from the late 1800's. The spread is reversible with what could be considered a summer side (lighter), and a winter side (darker). Email if you have questions. This came from an estate auction, so I don't know it's exact provenance. BEAUTIFUL. This will be sent Select Parcel Mail Insured, unless priority is less.
