Gill" in Quincy, Illinois, in full: I am just in receipt of your favor of the 28th ult. I wish I could write as you request but really I think you hardly appreciate that either I have to write you a careful essay [costing days of work], or else something that is not worth while reading. Don't you think that to read some one of my essays either in The American Ideals or The Strenuous Life would be better? Roosevelt has handwritten "costing days of work" within the letter's body. In good condition, taped reinforcement on verso for central horizontal fold costing some of the handwritten text, edge splits.
