This is USGS Professional Paper 358, “Primary Textures and Mineral Associations in the Ultramafic Zone of the Stillwater Complex, Montana.” Published in 1961, this 106-page book is packed with pictures and explanations of the textures and features found in various rocks in the basal ultramafic zone of the Stillwater Complex. All the main rock types in the basal zone are discussed - chromitites, dunites, harzburgites, gabbros, peridotites. You name it, it's in here. This book predates the discovery of the platinum-palladium mineralization found higher up in the Stillwater Complex. This was published when chromium was the most important ore found in these rocks, and there are numerous pictures of chromite-bearing rocks. The processes leading to the formation of these rocks were not that well understood at the time. The evolution of the various textures is discussed in detail, and it turns out the rocks and their crystallization processes are quite complex. The role of crystal-melt interactions is discussed in detail, as well as many other processes. This is a really fascinating work, sure to be of value to anyone interested in layered mafic intrusions, or the Stillwater complex, or historic chrome mining, or Montana geology.
