Original Untitled Abstract by Tomás Oliva Sr. Cuban Artist Signed, Dated Original Unreleased Rare –P14 Up for sale is a Signed and Dated '93 Untitled Abstract Painting by renowned Cuban sculptor Tomás Oliva (1930-1996) who was a founding member and a leading figure in the formation of Cuba's strident abstract-informalist movement and highly influential group known as Los Once (The Eleven). The group was but would have a brief existence, from 1953 to 1955 and it’s credited with being one of the earliest proponents of abstraction in Cuban art. The Grupo de los Once was the most famous association of Cuban abstract artists (comprised of Guido Llinás, Agustin Cárdenas, René Ávila, José I. Bermúdez, Hugo Consuegra, Viredo Espinosa, Fayad Jamís, Antonio Vidal, Francisco Antigua, José A. Diaz Peláez, and Oliva). "The group represented a dramatic shift away from the work of the much lauded previous generation of vanguard artists whose work was characterized for its figurative approach and its marked emphasis on notions of identity and nationality through work that exalted traditional values and cultural types personified by the guajiro or Cuban peasant. The Grupo de Los Once gravitated towards a non-representational approach that reflected the gamut of formal possibilities from the biomorphic and lyrical to hard edge or geometric abstraction often with a look towards the New York School rather than the Parisian vanguard.” [1] Oliva rose to become the country's director of fine arts he was vanished by Castro's government for ideological differences.
