1950s Rare EDWIN & MARY SCHEIER Pottery BOWL Abstract Sgraffito Hare's Fur Glaze - $1,275 - (Milford, NH)
Exceptional bowl by Edwin and Mary Scheier, circa 1950 - 1955, the hand-thrown vessel of straight-sided form with rounded bottom and small circular foot, the exterior finished in a chocolate brown matte glaze, the central portion with exuberant allover sgraffito decoration featuring abstract and biomorphic motifs, the lower and topmost portions overlaid in a thick satiny/semi-gloss "hare's fur" drip glaze overflowing the rim, the same glaze used for the interior, the overall dimensions approx. 7-3/8" in diameter at the rim by 5-3/4" tall, the base incised "SCHEIER." Very faint horizontal surface scratch near bottom of interior (quite minor, visible only on closest inspection, and noted only for strictest accuracy), otherwise excellent, beautifully preserved condition, with no cracks, chips, crazing, staining, or residue, all of the thick, vulnerable exterior glaze drips fully intact and undisturbed. A superlative example from the most fruitful and innovative period of the famed potters' longtime collaboration, featuring a glaze treatment most unusual in their work. A nearly identical example (link provided on request) is in the collection of the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire, the most extensive, encyclopedic repository of the Scheiers' work in all media.
