ANTIQUE JAPANESE THEATER PERFORMERS ORIGINAL WOOD BOXES & DISPLAY STANDS - $35 - (Stockton, MO)
A rare pair of dolls to find . . Kabuki stage actors each in their original wood box. They are each mounted on a wood stand but come with a larger presentation platform, too. On one box someone has written in pencil "Name - Benkei Pronounced Bek-Kay"The actor holding the Lion (?) mask in one hand came in a box labeled "Name - Ren Jishi Pronounced Ren-Jee-Shee" These dolls are very, very old. I have none other like them in my collection. Without the larger presentation stand, they each measure about 8-9" tall. One doll has damage to his face which you will see in the photo, but remember the faces and hands of these dolls are covered with Gofun crushed oyster shell, or in this particular case since they are older, could be crushed egg shell. I see no other damage. You are bidding on both dolls! Look what I just received from a pompous eBay shopper! Thank you for the chastising. My errors were not due to dishonesty but to ignorance. To what can we attribute your insensitivity? Poor manners, arrogance? I have always welcomed additional information from other eBayers but this smacks of mean spiritedness. No life, I guess. That's NOT a "dragon," it's a Lion ("shishi" ??). And it is NOT a "mask," it's a large puppet that is held over the head. The other doll is the VERY famous and instantly-recognizable legendary character "Benkei" (??). And these dolls do not have "glass" eyes, they are painted on.
