C-47 Skytrain `Buzz Buggy` RAF D-Day Operation Display Model Description: **ONLY ONE LEFT! THIS ITEM IS NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION.** The Douglas C-47 Skytrain or Dakota (RAF designation) is a military transport aircraft developed from the civilian Douglas DC-3 airliner. It was used extensively by the Allies during World War II and remains in front line service with various military operators to the present day. The C-47 Skytrain was a derivative of the DC-3 which had been extremely successful as a pre-war civilian airliner, Plying its trade across the continental USA the DC-3 was the first airliner to be able to make money purely by transporting passengers alone. When WW2 broke out the DC-3 was adapted for military use with a rear cargo door fitted and a strengthened floor amongst other adaptations. More than 10,000 were built during and after WW2 and some are still in use today in various guises, a testament to the outstanding design by Douglas of what is now an iconic aircraft. Our version 'Buzz Buggy' was used by the 81st Troop Carrier Squadron, 436th Troop Carrier Group, which operated from RAF Membury for the D-Day operation. They dropped the 101st on D-Day and were also utilised for Operation Dragoon, the invasion of Southern France in 1944.
