1938 Martin Flash Key (Nickel Plated) Martin Res & Mfg Co. SN 5085 New York, NY - $325 - (Baton Rouge, LA)
For Auction: Here is another key whose date of manufacture is widely discussed. Some point to 1938 as the first year of the Martin Research & Manufacturing Co production and very soon after mention its sale or demise in 1939-40 having produced only 1,000 to 2,000 keys. Said to be run by Horace Martin's sons, three examples of the parent company's line (Vibroplex, 235 Broadway) were produced at 233 Broadway including this No 1 "Original". Fully nickel plated, this key as withstood the test of time quite well. Now near 90 years of age, the bug is Vibroplex to its core no matter what label you put on it. This key comes with its original "wedge" connector & cloth covered cord, pretty much a thing of the past but a wonderful touch to a key on which it was used. Martin Flash keys were short lived and there were not very many of them. By comparison with Vibroplex labeled keys, there were very few so those which survived until today are even fewer. This is a nickel plated Martin and it is almost 95-100% without issue. My price is a bargain for this rare key in this condition. The pictures are flash taken so very harsh on the eyes; in person it is just beautiful (at least to a key collector!). Condition: Used very good physical condition and we see no problems or issues with it. The nickel plated base has held up better than similar chromed bases produced even later have. The plated parts are all showing less than their original polished surfaces but continue to protect the key well. The key needs a careful cleaning and proper display case for its continued safe keeping. Please study the photos and ask any questions now. Terms: The key here at auction is auctioned as a desirable commodity and will be well packed. It is offered AS IS and it is not returnable. Please contact me NOW if you have any questions. Shipped Quickly & Packed Well.
