Antique Native American wooden Mallet basket making tool original blue paint - $390 - (North Montpelier, VT)

This is a Native American birch mallet with original blue and black paint. This mallet would have been used as a tool for pounding ash splints to prepare them for basket making. Most likely of Penobscot tribe origin. The mallet is hand carved with great texture and care marks. The patina is excellent and the paint is original. A very graceful form and a very decorative utilitarian object as were many of the native american tools..I estimate that this was made circa 1900 or before. I obtained this on a trip to Maine over 30 years ago and it has been in my collection ever since. The mallet has definitely been used but it is in excellent condition. The measurements are; 11" tall by 4" wide. It weighs a little over 2 pounds.
