George Nakashima Walnut Headboard 72" wide 36" High Made in 1968 Copy of Invoice - $6,500 - (Pocasset, MA)
Authentic headboard from the George Nakashima Studio, New Hope , PA. Originally purchased in 1968. American Walnut with one free edge and it features an area of sapwood that blends to the darker heart wood. The free edge shows worm tunneling as an added detail. The vertical supports are also walnut. The stretcher is a 1" x 8" walnut board that has two free edges. The overall height is 36.5" at the ends and 35.5" at the middle. As seen in the photos there is a curve to the top of the headboard. The headboard width is 72" at the top, the widest point, and 61.5 " wide at the bottom of the headboard. Each end is cut at an angle. The headboard section measures 18.5" at the ends and is a full 1" thick. The vertical supports are 3" D x 1.75" W and 34" H. They are notched for a place to seat the headboard. The supports are 50" between and centered. The bottom of the headboard sits 18" from the bottom of the supports.The original owners name is on the back of the stretcher. We have a copy of the original invoice (original cost $150.00) with a hanging wall cabinet also included.The headboard has a 7" long split to the center of the board that is shown in two pictures. We hade the split assessed at the Nakashima Studio on 2/16/19 and they recommended a butterfly key be attached. There is some minor paint splatter and the expected bumps and bruises to the legs. Otherwise very good condition. This can be used on a Queen size bed, ours measures 63"wide. The current Nakashima Studio catalogue lists a Queen size headboard at 90" and costs $5,500.00, a Double size headboard at 84" and $4,400.00. The last two photos show the headboard at the end of our "queen size bed".We recently brought it to the Nakashima Studio to have them estimate the cost of refinishing and adding a "butterfly" repair to the split.
